What’s scarier than anything you’ll see on Halloween? Oral Cancer.
Oral cancer kills one American every hour.
That’s a shocking statistic, especially when we consider what it means…
that of the 42,000 people in the US diagnosed with oral cancer five years ago, 18,000 are not alive today.
What makes this cancer even more concerning is that 40% of it is found in patients who do not present any of the traditional risk factors.
Furthermore, this cancer is deadly when it is discovered late-stage:the mortality rate for oral cancer is higher than the rates for cervical, laryngeal, testicular, thyroid, or skin cancers. Finally, in a world where three out of four people are infected with human papillomavirus (HPV) at some point in their lives, it is especially important to remember that certain strains of HPV increase your risk for oral cancer fifty-fold.
Though these statistics are staggering, we want you to know that when found at an early stage of development, oral cancers have an 80-90% survival rate. Oral cancer is usually found too late, not because it is not discoverable or diagnosable… but because most people are not aware of the opportunity to screen for the disease.
So how does this apply to you and what can Dr. Osina, Dr. Messina, and your dental team do to help?
Our office uses proven OralID fluorescence technology by which we shine a blue light in the mouth to identify any abnormal lesions earlier than they can be seen by the naked eye. This technology helps us detect changes in your mouth not visible during traditional white light examination, and we do this at every appointment, at no cost to you. Every appointment, every time.
Come see us and ask about how we use OralID to save lives. And remember: oral cancer doesn’t have to go unnoticed.
A 2 minute exam could save your life.
